Spruce Creek Graduate selected for elite US Navy program

I received some exciting news this weekend.

Shawn Garner, a 2006 graduate of Spruce Creek High School, has been selected by a board of Naval Officers for the extremely competitive Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate Program (NUPOC).  As a selectee, Shawn will receive a monthly stipend from the Navy until graduation from Florida State University in May, 2010, and then will attend the US Navy’s Officer Candidate School (OCS).  Upon completion of OCS, Shawn will be commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy.  His first assignment will be to the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Charleston, SC.

Shawn was sworn into the US Navy by his father, Lieutenant Colonel Rich Garner, USAF ret.  His proud mother, Lieutenant Colonel Deberah Garner, USAF ret., was also in attendance at the ceremony in front of the Capitol Building in Washington DC

Shawn said "It's only the first step, but I'm excited and honored to be selected."

Way to go, Shawn!  Your community is proud of you.
